As the University of Tennessee prepares to visit Tampa for the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day, it's worth remembering that 40 years ago the Vols helped open the new Tampa Stadium against the University of Tampa Spartans. Although the third-ranked Vols defeated the Spartans 38-0, a crowd of over 27,000 enjoyed the debut of Tampa's $4 million showcase stadium. While the original Tampa Stadium is long gone -- having been replaced by Raymond James Stadium in 1998 -- the opening of the stadium represents one of the most significant moments in Tampa sports history.
